First things first, we need to say a massive thanks to all the businesses and individuals that made the first ‘Great Wairarapa Food Drive’ a huge success. In lieu of lavish gifts and Christmas Cards to clients this year, we acted as a collection centre for food parcels. RIVAL Wealth challenged other businesses to lend some muscle to this cause, and along with individuals dropping off food we all raised an amazing $1,500 worth of food.
Sadler Oakley Newman, CE Spray, Training Ventures, Wai-iti Romneys, Woodworks Flooring, KR Dudson Accountants, and The Villa Beauty Therapy were all companies that made generous donations. Thank you very much to the many people that made the effort to drop something into the office or posted something through.

Is spending less and saving more your New Year’s resolution?
If so, you would be part of 9% of Americans that will be focusing in this area in 2012. Weight loss is the top New Year’s resolution this year, with nearly one in five Americans (18%) saying they want to drop a few pounds. You will have to chat to another expert about weight loss, but we can help with these simple tips to spend less and save more.
8 TIPS TO SPEND LESS AND SAVE MORE IN 2012
| 1. Mortgage With the Reserve Bank base rate at an historic low, many Kiwi’s are taking the opportunity to repay large chunks of their mortgage. Experts predict the base rate will rise later in the year — and with it the cost of borrowing — so reducing the capital you owe, even by $50 per week, is a sound move. Finding you the best mortgage option, so your mortgage doesn’t end up owning you 2. Budgeting Budgeting is not for poor people, as I was once told! It is for smart people taking control of their money. Take a look at your monthly ins and outs over a three month period. If more is going out than coming in, something has to give. Managing cash allows you to identify areas where you can cut back, such as regular morning coffees or hefty tabs on big nights out. Make a resolution to check your current account at least once a week. You must know where your money is going. Tell your money what to do with our Cash Management Sheet. 3. Insurance Take time to go through your insurance (home, contents, car, income, health and life); we can help you with better deals. Cheap insurance is useless insurance if you have to pay a prohibitive excess or worse, it does not pay out on a claim at all. Get the right advice for all your insurance needs 4. Superannuation We are living longer, so saving for our retirement has never been more important. Of course, in tough economic times and when purse strings are tight, paying regularly into superannuation can be tough. If you have spare cash make sure the first $1,042 a year is stashed into KiwiSaver to get the $521 tax credit, and if you are employed you will get 2% from your employer too! Getting you the best return on your contributions 5. Energy The average annual household saving by switching power companies is $150. You never know, your savings might be more! Check out your possible savings at www.whatsmynumber.org.nz 6. Phone and broadband Forking out individual amounts for mobile, landline, broadband and digital TV can be expensive. Cheaper deals are often those bundled together and you can slash costs by paying by direct debit and making free calls over the internet with programmes like Skype. 7. Credit Cards and Personal Loans Whether credit cards or loans, they amount to the same thing —there will be interest to repay. If you are struggling to meet minimum repayments stretching the loan over a longer period may help with a single direct debit going out. Transferring what you owe to a new zero per cent interest credit card can give you several months grace to repay the capital, but make sure you cut up your old credit cards. 8. Estate Planning When putting your finances in order, consider who you want to leave them too. If you have not made a will, it is never too soon. If you have, is it time to reassess the benefactors?
